Hurricane Polo has become a category 5 storm near the west coast of Mexico. This is the highest storm level. On Tuesday, a US weather plane found winds of about 180 mph (285 km/h). The US National Hurricane Center called the storm “extremely dangerous.”

Polo is moving slowly to the northwest. Weather experts do not think it will hit the coast directly. But it may bring very heavy rain to Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacan. Some places may get 6 inches (15 cm) of rain, and a few may get 8 inches. This rain could cause floods and falling mud. Large sea waves may also be dangerous.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum asked people near the Pacific coast to be careful. Very warm ocean water is making Polo stronger. Weather experts say it may stay at category 5 for the next few days. They are watching the storm closely.
