Hurricane Lala is moving close to Hawaii. It has winds of up to 80 miles per hour (130 km per hour). It may hit the Big Island on Saturday or pass close to its south coast. This could be Hawaii’s first direct hit by a hurricane since 1992.

Officials warn about strong winds, very heavy rain, floods, and mudslides. Some places on the Big Island may get up to 25 inches (63 cm) of rain. Sea water may rise by 3 feet. Governor Josh Green told people to prepare for a lot of water and dangerous weather.

Almost 37,000 homes and businesses had no power on Saturday afternoon. Many flights were cancelled, and fallen trees and mud blocked some roads. Shelters are open across the Big Island. The storm may move west across Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau on Sunday.
