Trump threatens to bring back $1.8bn fund

US President Donald Trump says he may bring back a $1.8bn fund. The money could pay people who say past US governments treated them unfairly. Trump says some of these people are his supporters. Some lawmakers worry that people punished for the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol could get money.

The argument is also about Todd Blanche. He has worked as acting US attorney general since April. Trump wants him to have the job permanently. Republican senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis will not support him yet. They want Blanche to promise in writing that the Justice Department will not bring back the fund.

Trump said on Saturday that he will bring back the plan if the senators do not support Blanche. Tillis said many Republican senators would vote against the fund. The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to meet on Tuesday and may vote on Blanche. Tillis said he hopes they can find an answer before then.
