The United States has put new taxes on goods from 60 trade partners. The new taxes are between 10% and 12.5%. They cover 99.4% of all goods that the US buys from other countries. The countries include the UK, China, Canada, Japan and India. The European Union also faces the taxes. The US started the new taxes on Thursday.

The US says these countries do not do enough to stop goods made by people who must work against their will. Countries that agree to stronger rules will pay a 10% tax. Other countries will pay 12.5%. US trade official Jamieson Greer said the taxes would help workers. President Donald Trump ordered the action after the US Supreme Court stopped many of his earlier taxes in February.

Brazil, Japan and Australia said the new taxes were not fair. China said it does not use this kind of forced work, but human rights groups disagree. Experts say the taxes may make goods more expensive for US companies and shoppers. Brazil may answer with its own taxes. Other countries may also sell more goods to places outside the US. The Trump government may add more taxes after it finishes looking at trade with 16 countries.
