Canada puts up Lake Ontario sign after Trump name change

Ontario leader Doug Ford put up a large sign beside Lake Ontario in Canada. The sign says, “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” Ford said the lake had this name before US President Donald Trump, and it will keep this name after Trump leaves office.

On Thursday, Trump signed an order to call the lake “Lake America” in the United States. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes. It is between Ontario in Canada and New York state in the US. The US can use a new name, but Canada does not have to use it.

The name fight started after trade talks between the two countries failed. The US added a 50% tax on $20 billion of goods from Canada. Canada plans to add the same level of taxes on US goods next month. US government offices now have 30 days to make the lake’s new US name official.
