Canada opened the Gordie Howe International Bridge on Friday. The bridge connects Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan. It cost Canada C$6.4 billion and took eight years to build. Leaders from Canada and the United States planned to open it together. But Canada told the US leaders not to come after US President Donald Trump announced new taxes on Canadian goods.

The bridge is important for trade. Goods worth more than C$1 billion cross between Windsor and Detroit each day. Canada paid for the bridge because US leaders did not agree about the plan for many years. Earlier this year, Trump said he might stop the bridge from opening. He wanted the US to have more control and receive more money from it.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to give money from bridge fees to a US fund for 15 years. Some Canadians say he gave too much to the US. Others say the deal was needed because businesses need the bridge. Canada and the US still need to discuss their larger trade problems. The bridge may help cars, parts, and other goods move faster between the two countries.
