Germany debates the future of Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest
10 minutes ago

A fire badly damaged the Eagle’s Nest on 23 October. The mountain house stands near Berchtesgaden in the German Alps. The Nazis built it in 1938. Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders visited it. Before the fire, many tourists came each year. They could see the mountains and eat at its restaurant.
Police think someone started the fire. They have taken a 33-year-old man to a secure hospital. Some people want workers to remove the ruins and let nature return. Richard Evans, an expert on Nazi Germany, supports this idea. He says the house was only a special project for Nazi leaders.
Other people want to rebuild all or part of the house. Two leaders in Bavaria support rebuilding it. They do not want the ruins to become a meeting place for people who support Nazi ideas. Historian Isabel Heinemann says Germany must teach people about its Nazi past, but it should not rebuild the house exactly as it was. Officials will talk with historians before they decide what to do.
