Trump faces criticism over Russian diesel plan
56 minutes ago
US President Donald Trump plans to buy diesel from Russia. He says Russia will send 300,000 tonnes first. It may send 500,000 tonnes in November and one million tonnes later. Trump says this will help lower fuel prices in the United States. Diesel now costs about $6.28 a gallon. Prices rose after the war with Iran started at the end of February.
Seven US senators oppose the plan. They include four Republicans and three Democrats. They say US law does not allow Russian energy imports. They also say the money could help Russia continue its war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also opposes the deal. However, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the deal follows the law.
Russia says it may later send up to three million tonnes each month. Some experts are not sure Russia can send this much. They also say the first shipment is only about half of the diesel the US uses in one day. Trump hopes the deal will lower costs for farmers, truck drivers, and other Americans before next month’s elections. More political leaders may continue to challenge the plan.
