Pentagon plans public firing squad execution

The US military plans to kill former Army major Nidal Hasan by firing squad. The execution will take place at Fort Hood in Texas on 3 December. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said people will be able to watch it live online. This would be the first live public execution in the US in almost 100 years.

Hasan killed 13 unarmed US soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. He said he carried out the shooting, and a military court gave him the death penalty in 2013. President Donald Trump approved the plan for the execution. It would be the first US military execution since 1961 and the first military firing squad execution since 1945.

However, the execution may not happen on 3 December. Hasan still has court cases open. His lawyers can ask other courts to look at his case, and a court may stop the execution for many years. Some lawyers also say a live online execution may break US law. It is not clear which website could show it, because many large websites do not allow videos of people dying.
