Canada prepares for a possible US attack

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada has made plans for a possible attack by the United States. He said an attack is very unlikely. But he believes the government must prepare for every danger. US President Donald Trump has often said that Canada should become the 51st US state. He has also used taxes on Canadian goods to put pressure on Canada.
Canada and the US are close neighbours and long-time partners. Their soldiers work together, and both countries are members of NATO. They also protect North America together and share important information. Still, many Canadians feel worried. In January, a poll found that more than 30% of Canadians thought a US attack could happen.
Canada’s plans say the US could take important places in Canada within one week. Canada has a much smaller military. Canadian soldiers might then fight in small groups, and Canada could ask countries such as Britain and France for help. Canada’s defence leaders also want up to 300,000 new citizen soldiers with basic training. Experts say an attack is very unlikely, and many US military officers might refuse an order to attack Canada.
