US and Canada start a new trade fight

Trade talks between the United States and Canada ended on Friday without a deal. US President Donald Trump then put a 50% tax on some goods from Canada. These goods include wine, milk products, clothes, cement, and hockey equipment. The new tax covers about $20 billion of Canadian goods. Trump said Canada wants the good parts of being a US state without becoming one.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the US plan will hurt Canada. He said Canada will put the same level of taxes on US goods from 8 September. These goods will include steel, milk products, home machines, and electronic products. Carney said the two countries are now in a trade war. Canadian political leaders from several parties supported him.
The US and Canada buy and sell many goods from each other. New taxes can make goods cost more and may cause some people to lose their jobs. The US says it does not plan to start talks again now, but some Canadian leaders want both countries to return to talks. The fight may also hurt the trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico.
