A fast wildfire in western Canada has forced thousands of people to leave their homes. The Bald Range fire started on Friday in British Columbia. It quickly grew to more than 36 square miles, or 95 square kilometres. Fire workers said it was still not under control on Saturday morning.

Officials told all people in Summerland to leave. About 12,000 people live there. The area also lost power. Workers moved hundreds of older people and other care home residents to safer places. Nearby areas also told some people to leave or prepare to leave.

Emergency workers, police, and fire crews worked through the night to keep people safe. An emergency official, Erick Thompson, left his work centre to help his own family leave. It is not clear how many buildings have burned. The fire may keep growing, so more people may need to leave their homes.
