Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan on Tuesday. He is a former state health official and the son of Egyptian parents. He beat US lawmaker Haley Stevens in a close race. Democratic Party leaders supported Stevens. Groups outside the race spent nine times more money to help her, including $32 million from Aipac. El-Sayed had support from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

El-Sayed wants the government to help pay for health care. He also wants lower medicine prices, higher taxes for rich people, and less big money in elections. In November, he will face Republican Mike Rogers, a former US lawmaker. Michigan is a state where either party can win. No Republican has won a Senate race there since 1994. El-Sayed must now win support from Stevens voters in Detroit and country areas. The result may help decide which party controls the US Senate.

Other votes on Tuesday showed different views inside both parties. In Michigan, Donavan McKinney and William Lawrence beat Democrats who were closer to the political center. Both men want less US help for Israel. But Democrats who support help for Israel won races in Washington state and Missouri. Voters in Missouri and Kansas also said no to plans supported by Republicans. Trump-backed Republicans won several races, including John James for Michigan governor. However, Trump-backed Amir Hassan lost his race in Michigan.
