Quebec separatist party wins election

The Parti Québécois, or PQ, is expected to win the election in Quebec, Canada. The party will not have more than half of the seats, so it will need help from other parties. Its leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, will become the new head of the Quebec government. The PQ last led Quebec in 2014.
The PQ wants Quebec to become a separate country from Canada. Plamondon says Quebec may hold a public vote on this after US President Donald Trump leaves office. This may happen in 2029 or 2030. Quebec held similar votes in 1980 and 1995. Today, about 30% of people in Quebec support leaving Canada.
Plamondon may also fight Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney over immigration and the British monarchy. He wants to stop Quebec money from going to the office that represents King Charles III in the province. This plan may face problems in court. Carney congratulated Plamondon and said he wants to work with him on jobs, homes, homelessness, and help for businesses hurt by US tariffs.
