Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government has studied a small chance of US military action against Canada. He said this is not likely to happen. But he believes Canada must prepare for serious dangers. He did not explain what plans Canada has made.

The United States has a much larger military than Canada. The US has more than 2 million full-time and part-time military members. Canada has fewer than 200,000. In 2024, the US had 65 military submarines, while Canada had four. Carney has increased military spending because Canada has a very long coast and land near the Arctic.

Relations between Canada and the US have become worse under US President Donald Trump. Trump has called Canada the “51st state.” The two countries have also put new taxes on each other’s goods. Carney still speaks with Trump often. He said they can talk openly, and he hopes Canada and the US can restart trade talks.
