The US and Denmark have made a new agreement about security in Greenland. Greenland is a large island near the Arctic. It is part of Denmark, but it has its own local government. US President Donald Trump had said that the US might take Greenland by force. He said the island is important for US safety.

Trump said the US will have permanent rights to protect Greenland. He said Russia, China, and other US enemies cannot put soldiers there or make important business deals without US approval. A US official said the US can build more military sites and fly over Greenland. The US already has more than 100 military workers at a base there. However, the full agreement is not public, so some details are not clear.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the deal respects Denmark and Greenland. Greenland’s leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, also welcomed it. The leaders plan to sign it at the United Nations meeting next week. Lawmakers must then approve it. The agreement may continue even if Greenland becomes an independent country in the future.
