New US taxes on many goods from Canada started on Saturday. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney stopped trade talks with the US on Friday night. He said the US changed its plan at the last minute. He said Canada will put the same value of taxes on US goods.
US President Donald Trump set a 50% tax on about $20 billion of Canadian goods. These goods include wine, milk products, clothes, cement, and hockey equipment. The US already has taxes on Canadian steel, cars, wood, and other goods. The two countries had talked since July, but they could not make a deal.
Canada and the US sell many goods to each other. Businesses say the new taxes may raise prices and hurt jobs in both countries. US official Jamieson Greer said the US may act if Canada adds new taxes. The two countries may start talks again, but they have not set a new date.
