An avalanche killed six Nepali mountain guides on Broad Peak in Pakistan last week. Broad Peak is the world’s 12th highest mountain. The six men were Nirmal Purja, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Pur Bahadur Gurung, Gyaljen Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, and Nawang Thindu Sherpa. They were part of a group climbing the mountain.

Purja, 43, was a famous British-Nepali climber. He climbed the world’s 14 highest mountains in just over six months. Kili Pemba, 46, also climbed all 14 mountains. He helped make the first winter climb of K2 in 2021. The other men also climbed many very high mountains. Their deaths are a very great loss for Nepal’s mountain guides.

Pakistan’s high mountains are far from towns and roads. Guides must put up ropes and camps themselves. Rescue helicopters also have trouble reaching them. The deaths may bring new calls for better safety rules. But experts say people will probably keep climbing these mountains because they want new records and worldwide fame.
