Thousands of Canadians want US ambassador to leave

More than 70,000 Canadians have signed an online petition. They want Canada to remove Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador in Ottawa. They say he has spoken too much about Canadian politics. They are also angry because he shared comments about Canada becoming the 51st US state.
Leanne Walker, a woman from Calgary, started the petition. She says many Canadians worry about their country and its future. The petition also asks Canada to look at meetings between US officials and people who want Alberta to leave Canada. Green Party leader Elizabeth May plans to bring the petition to Parliament later this year. The Canadian government must then give an answer.
This is happening during important trade talks between Canada and the US. US President Donald Trump plans to put a 50% tax on about $20 billion to $28 billion of Canadian goods next Wednesday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada may answer with its own action. The two countries may reach a short-term deal before the new tax begins.
