A judge in New Mexico, US, ordered Meta to pay $567 million on Thursday. Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. The judge said Meta did not warn people enough about dangers to children. Meta must now pay a total of $942 million in this case. An earlier ruling ordered it to pay $375 million.

The judge said Meta’s apps showed some children harmful sexual content. He also said they helped some adults contact children. Most of the new money, about $420 million, will help children get health care and support. Some money will also train teachers and health workers about online dangers.

The judge also ordered Meta to make new safety rules. Adults must not send messages to children, and children must not send or receive nude pictures. Meta must limit young users to about three hours a day on Facebook and Instagram. Meta said it does not agree with the ruling and will appeal. Another large case against Meta will start in California next week.
