The US team left a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday. The meeting was about Russia’s war in Ukraine. The team left while France’s UN ambassador, Jerome Bonnafont, was speaking. The US said it was angry about France’s recent comments.

The problem started after a vote on Friday. The US, Russia, and North Korea voted against giving UN human rights chief Volker Turk another term. France then said the US was no longer a leader on human rights. The UN group still gave Turk another term. In the vote, 144 countries said yes, 10 said no, and 13 did not choose a side.

US ambassador Dan Negrea said the US may leave more meetings until France takes back its words. The US also said it may change how much money and support it gives to the UN. France said Turk did good and fair work in his first term. The UN said all countries should accept the vote.
