US President Donald Trump spoke at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night. The event took place at the Washington Hilton hotel. It celebrated reporters and their work. Trump joked about reporters and called some news “fake”. But he also said he respected most reporters and asked people to support free speech.

The group held the dinner after a gun attack stopped the first event in April. Trump said people must solve problems with words, not guns. He gave an award to officer Victor Gonzalez for his work during the attack. Police say 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen tried to kill the president. Security was very strong at the new dinner.

About 700 people went to the dinner. More than 2,000 people had gone to the first event in April. Reporters received awards for their work, including a team that reported on Trump’s links to Jeffrey Epstein. Several top government officials also attended. The group plans to hold the dinner at the same hotel next year.
